The FLEAT is a straight flared terminal system for use with highway guardrail. It offers improved safety features over similar systems. The impact head functions by sliding over the w-beam rail, absorbing the energy of the vehicle, much like the SKT. Also, the flare is straight, instead of being a parabolic curve, improving traffic face redirection performance. The straight rail of the terminal allows for faster loading of the anchor cable, thus reducing vehicle snagging. Installation has been made easier as well, due to fewer parts and basic design parameters. The rail is placed at a 4' straight flare, which when laid out at the full 37' 6" of the terminal, dramatically reduces installation time. No need to layout a new offset for each post. Also, the FLEAT has fewer posts and components than any other flared terminal. Plus, most all of the components are interchangeable with other systems, such as the SKT. A new design feature of the FLEAT-350 now places all of the system posts at 6' 3" spacing. Previously, the FLEAT was installed with the middle 12' 6" w-beam panel having 4' 2" post spacing. Now, the middle panel is a standard 12' 6" w-beam section with standard 6' 3" post spacing. This upgrade will increase productivity in the field by simplifying installation, as well as reduce inventory requirements by utilizing more standard hardware items. Additionally, the FLEAT-350 is approved for use with a steel post option whereby the first two breakaway wood posts are replaced with steel breakaway posts.
